The Citroën 2CV Fourgonnette is a legendary van that was produced from 1951 onwards. The name Fourgonnette literally means 'van' in French, and that is exactly what this car was intended for: a compact, reliable commercial vehicle with the technology of the 2CV .
With a similar chassis, engine and interior to the classic 2CV , the Fourgonnette was an ideal choice for farmers, market traders and small entrepreneurs . Its lightweight construction and flexible suspension system made it ideal for the rugged French countryside .
A total of 1,246,335 units were produced until the Acadiane took over in 1979 .
The evolution of the Citroën 2CV Fourgonnette
The Fourgonnette was built in several versions, each with improvements in power, loading capacity and driving comfort .
🚗 2CV AU (1951 – 1954)
The first 2CV van was the AU (A Utilitaire) . This model had a payload of 250 kg and retained the suspension system of the normal 2CV , making it extremely suitable for rural areas.
🔹 Engine : 9 hp, 375 cc
🔹 Features : Large wheels for better grip, ideal for uneven roads
🚗 2CV AZU (1954 – 1979)
In 1954 the AU was replaced by the AZU , which had a more powerful engine.
🔹 Engine : 12 hp, 425 cc
🔹 Features : Better performance, still 250kg load capacity
In 1959 the rim size was changed: from the original 400 mm to the modern 15 inch that we know from the later 2CV models .
Until 1962 the AZU still had the classic ribbed hood , after which it got a smoother hood .
🚗 2CV AZU250 (1960s – 1979)
The AZU250 was a further refinement of the AZU and was later fitted with a 2CV4 engine block .
🔹 Features :
✅ Smooth exterior with a less ribbed hood
✅ Better performance thanks to an improved engine
From van to camper
Originally the Fourgonnette was intended as a workhorse for small entrepreneurs, but today there are still a few examples that can be found. Some have a more powerful engine built in , while others have been converted into a small camper .
Whether you are a vintage car enthusiast or a fan of French classics , the 2CV Fourgonnette remains a timeless icon that evokes nostalgia in young and old.
